History and Mission of the Children’s Hospital Foundation

The mission of the Children’s Hospital Foundation of Manitoba Inc. is to be an independent agency whose purpose is to raise and distribute funds for the advancement of knowledge and care in the fields of child health and child health research, thereby contributing to the improved health of children everywhere.

Established in 1971, the Children’s Hospital Foundation of Manitoba works to support the special health care needs of children through reliable and consistent funding of equipment and programs at Winnipeg Children’s Hospital and pediatric medical research at the Manitoba Institute of Child Health. Since its inception, the Foundation has raised more than $80 million.

In 2001, the Children’s Hospital Foundation of Manitoba established the Manitoba Institute of Child Health to bring together researchers with a common priority of unlocking the mysteries of childhood disease. This world-class facility is located on the Health Sciences Centre site. The goal of the Institute is to be a centre of excellence in pediatric research attracting world-class researchers to Manitoba contributing to the overall health of the provincial economy. The Manitoba Institute of Child Health is located on the 5th and 6th floors of the John Buhler Research Centre in the heart of Winnipeg.

The scope of programs that the Foundation funds, are broad. From operating grants to support research projects, to studentships and Post Doctorial Fellowships, we make a commitment each year which fosters a world-class research environment right here in Manitoba. This ensures that our children have access to the latest advancements in medical technology and treatment.

Research gives patients and families at the hospital hope for the one thing they need most of all – a cure. This includes study into everything from asthma to diabetes, to leukemia.

The Foundation also provides support funding for special equipment and program needs at the Hospital. This includes funding for pilot projects, like asthma education, and program support for Child Life Department initiatives, like music therapy.

It is only thanks to the generosity of a caring community that Foundation is able to support the special health care needs of children. Manitobans continue to demonstrate, year after year, their commitment to furthering the cause of child health and wellness by investing their time and dollars to help the Children’s Hospital Foundation of Manitoba. Our province is well known for the amazing strength of its philanthropic community. This strength continues to ensure that the over 130,000 children treated annually at the Children’s Hospital of Winnipeg, enjoy the highest possible standard of health care.
