Members of the Department of Pediatrics and Child Health Win Prestigious Awards

Special awards were recently bestowed on current and retired members as well as trainees of the Department of Pediatrics and Child Health.

Congratulations to all of the very worthy recipients and wonderful ambassadors for the Department and Faculty!

Congratulations to Dr. David Grewer (retired),

who will be inducted into the Order of Manitoba, July 2010 for services in Pediatrics and Aboriginal and Newborn Medicine, with an extraordinary contribution to northern health care. Established under special legislation, the Order of Manitoba is the province’s highest honour. It recognizes individuals who have demonstrated excellence and achievement in any field of endeavour, benefiting in an outstanding manner the social, cultural or economic well-being of Manitoba and its residents.

Congratulations to Dr. Alan Becker,

elected to join the Canadian Academy of Health Sciences (CAHS). Fellows of the Academy are elected on the basis of their demonstrated leadership, creativity, distinctive competencies and commitment to advance academic health sciences. Membership is considered one of the highest honours for members of the Canadian health sciences community and carries with it a covenant to serve the Academy and Canadian society.

Congratulations to Dr. David Eisenstat

recipient of the 2010 Paediatric Chairs of Canada (PCC) Academic Leadership-Clinical Educator Award. Dr. Eisenstat was cited by the PCC for his remarkable leadership skills and tremendous influence in the Faculty of Medicine at the University of Manitoba in medical, graduate and postgraduate education; as well as for his outstanding achievements in clinical medicine, education and research; and for his unique contribution to health research education in Manitoba and nationally.

Congratulations to Dr. T. Vidhya (Vid) Persaud (retired)

recipient of the American Association of Anatomists Henry Gray/Elsevier Distinguished Educator Award, The highest award for Achievement in Anatomical Science Education for human anatomy education in the anatomical sciences as broadly defined—including gross anatomy, embryology, histology, and neuroanatomy—at the medical/dental, graduate, or undergraduate level of teaching.

Dr. Jon McGavock,

recipient of the Cosmopolitan Foundation of Canada Inc.’s annual award for diabetes research and for receiving a CIHR New Investigative Award.

Dr. Robert (Bob) Schroth,

recipient of the MMSF award (in partnership with MHRC) entitled Clinical Research Professorship in Population Medicine Award.

Congratulations to Dr. Ming-Ka Chan,

recipient of the 2010 Canadian Association for Medical Education (CAME) Certificate of Merit.

Dr. Shyamala Dakshinamurti,

recipient of the MMSF award (in partnership with MHRC) entitled F. W. Du Val Clinical Research Professorship Award.

Congratulations to the Winners of our Local Resident and Fellow Research Competition who represented our Department in the National Competition:

Residents Category – Dr. Guillaume Poliquin; and Fellows Category – Dr. Brandy Wicklow.
