New Director of Research at MICH

The Manitoba Institute of Child Health (MICH) is very pleased to announce that Dr. Terry Klassen, MD, MSc, FRCPC has accepted the position of Director of Research for MICH, the research division of the Children’s Hospital Foundation of Manitoba. He has also been appointed Director of Research for the Department of Pediatrics and Child Health, University of Manitoba and Pediatric Emergency Physician, Child Health Program, Winnipeg Regional Health Authority.

Dr. Klassen is no stranger to Winnipeg, having received his Medical degree from the University of Manitoba in 1982, followed by the completion of his Pediatric Residency in 1986. He was also in Manitoba in 1995-1996 when he was the founding Director of IM-PACT (Injuries Manitoba – Prevention of Adolescent and Childhood Trauma).

The research of Dr. Klassen has transformed the practice of Pediatric Emergency Medicine with his work in croup and bronchiolitis, having had 3 randomized controlled trials published in the New England Journal of Medicine. He has a consistent record of national and international peer reviewed funding, along with over 150 publications, with a significant number being in top-tier medical journals.

Creation, transformation and substantial growth have been a common theme in Dr. Klassen’s career to-date. His past roles include:

  • Founding Director, University of Alberta Evidence-Based Practice Centre
  • Founding Director, Alberta Research Center for Health Evidence (ARCHE)
  • Chair, Department of Pediatrics and Clinical Leader, Stollery Children’s Hospital
  • Director, Children’s Hospital of Eastern Ontario Research Institute (CHEO)
  • Founder, Pediatric Emergency Research of Canada (PERC)
  • Global Leader, Pediatric Emergency Research Networks (PERN)
  • Founder, Cochrane Child Health Field
  • Founding Co Editor-in-Chief, Evidence Based Child Health (a Wiley Inter-science journal)
  • Co Creator, StaR Child Health

Dr. Klassen comes to us, most recently, from Edmonton, Alberta where he was the founding Director of the Alberta Research Centre for Health Evidence, as well as Professor, Department of Pediatrics at the University of Alberta. Dr. Klassen is a builder, increasing staffing and funding wherever he has gone. He has also had a significant impact at the national and international level in child health research.
