Manitoba Institute of Child Health Announces New Director of Research

Dr. Terry Klassen Returns Home to Head Research Institute

Winnipeg, MB –The Manitoba Institute of Child Health (MICH), the research division of the Children’s Hospital Foundation of Manitoba, welcomes a world-class researcher to its team. After over a decade of work in other provinces, Dr. Terry Klassen, MD, MSc, FRCPC, returns to his home province of Manitoba to begin his role as Director of Research for MICH.

At a press conference on Thursday, September 2 at 9:30 a.m. on the 5th floor of the John Buhler Research Centre, Dr. Klassen will be introduced to the community and available to speak to media.

It feels great to come back to my home province and to be able to share what I have learnt in other academic centers in Ontario and Alberta. I look forward to sharing these experiences with the province that provided me with my medical school and pediatric training and working with all the great people at MICH to create a strong vision for the future.”

Mark Gray, Chair of Board for MICH says, “Dr. Klassen is a builder, increasing staffing and funding wherever he has gone. He has also had a significant impact at the national and international level in child health research and we are very fortunate to be welcoming him back to the province of Manitoba as our Director of Research.”

Dr. Klassen received his medical degree from the University of Manitoba in 1982, followed by the completion of his Pediatric Residency in 1986. He was also in Manitoba in 1995-1996 when he was the founding Director of IM-PACT (Injuries Manitoba – Prevention of Adolescent and Childhood Trauma). He comes to MICH, most recently, from Edmonton, Alberta where he was the founding Director of the Alberta Research Centre for Health Evidence, as well as Professor, Department of Pediatrics at the University of Alberta and Chair of the Department of Pediatrics from 1999 to 2009.

As Director of Research for MICH, Dr. Klassen will continue to build and foster local and collaborative relationships, direct all grant and research support, and direct logistics of the space. In addition to his role with MICH, he has also been appointed Director of Research for the Department of Pediatrics and Child Health, University of Manitoba and Pediatric Emergency Physician, Child Health Program, Winnipeg Regional Health Authority.

MICH is pleased to welcome Dr. Klassen home to Manitoba and to lead the new discoveries in child health and child health research.
